If you knew a bottle of water had been recycled from urine (尿), would you drink it? Astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) may soon do so.  NASA (美国航空航天局) said it would use a high-tech machine (高科技机器) to recycle wastewater at the ISS. The machine will recycle everything from sweat (汗), the water for washing hands, shower water, water used for brushing teeth, and even urine, to make drinking water.
It will save NASA millions of dollars each year. At present, each ISS astronaut uses about 4.4 liters (升) of water every day. It costs about $24 million a year to transport water up to ISS. NASA says that a liter of water costs about $11,000.
The machine will be sent to the ISS in October 2008. NASA hopes it will recycle about 93% of all water used on the station.  Will the water be clean? Scientists say the wastewater will go through a very complicated process (复杂的过程). For example, different chemicals will be put in the wastewater; the water will be heated to 130℃to get rid of bacteria (细菌). The recycled water is thousands of times better than the water from a city tap, scientists say.
NASA will use a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater at the ISS to __________.

A.protect the ISS
B.make astronauts at ISS work harder
C.provide better water and food for ISS astronauts
D.save the cost of transporting water up to the ISS

At present it costs NASA about ______ dollars to transport water up to an astronaut at the ISS a day.

A.4.4 thousand B.11 thousand
C.48.4 thousand D.24 million

Scientists plan to get rid of bacteria in the wastewater by ______.

A.freezing B.heating
C.shaking D.precipitating (沉淀)

The reading mainly tells us something about ______.

A.water recycling B.the International Space Station
C.a high-tech machine D.the cost of NASA

Which of the following sentences is true, according to the passage?

A.The recycled water is much better than that from a city tap.
B.The high-tech machine will recycle all the water used on the station.
C.At present, each ISS astronaut uses more water than the people living on the earth.
D.The high-tech machine can only recycle urine to make water at present

Many people travel to different places in the world by air.Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day,for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines(航空公司)offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste.Do you agree?

To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don't want to lose customers.

However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude(海拔)we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off.As the plane moves up,the change in air pressure(气压)reduces one third of the sensibility(感觉)of our taste buds(味蕾).So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however,is that our noses don't know it.

All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy(辛辣的)food.Without doing so,the food would be tasteless.

Now there are many researches on this.According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

Though scientists try their best,it is not as easy as they thought.Because they can't deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

Do you know that in some parts of the world, people build temporary(暂时的)hotels made of snow and blocks(大块)of ice? These are known as ice hotels.

Unlike usual hotels, all the rooms in the ice hotels are made of ice.In some ice hotels, even the glasses for drinks are made of ice blocks. So they only serve cold drinks. Also, hot food is not served in the ice hotels, but guests can eat hot food at places nearby.

To keep warm, guests sleep in comfortable sleeping bags on ice blocks that are covered by mattresses(床垫)and reindeer skins(驯鹿皮).

There are some places in the ice hotels that are heated, such as the bathrooms. This is because, even though it is not as cold in the ice hotels as it is outdoors(在户外),indoor temperatures are still very low.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the ice hotels is that they are rebuilt every year. They can be used only during the winter months. The ice hotels melt(融化)away when spring arrives. The ice blocks used to build these hotels are from nearby rivers. So,when the ice hotels melt away, they melt back into the rivers.

Reading makes one wise, but many adults seldom read. They say they are too busy to have time to read.Sure.They have work to do.They have families to support. But these are only excuses. The fact is that they haven't got a reading habit.A reading habit isn't something natural. It needs to be trained. And it's never too late to develop a reading habit.

Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit.A book in rich colors and with simple patterns(图案) such as lines and circles is a good choice for babies of three months old. When they reach six months, they will become interested in simple story books in rich colors.

When children get old enough to read by themselves,it's necessary to buy books that are both interesting and right for them to understand.Books which are either too easy or too difficult are not good for kids to keep their reading habits.

Only buying books for children isn't enough. For kids, parents are their first teachers. So parents should read books to set an example.Children will follow them.Scientists say imitatingthe adults is a born skill. And it is the most valuable way for children to learn. This will certainly help them develop a reading habit in the end.
