For 21 years,Georges Bwelle watched his ill father traveling to hospitals, which could not offer him all necessary help.
Jamef Bwelle suffered only a broken arm at first, but it finally developed into a hematoma. That would affect him for the rest of his life. Bwelle spent years taking his father to overcrowded hospitals.
It was not easy. They would leave home at 5 a.m. and ran to the hospital to be the first. There were a lot of patients. Some people could die because they were waiting.
The situation hasn’t changed much since Bwelle’s father died in 2002.
In Cameroon, there is one doctor for every 5,000 people while in the United States there is one doctor for every 413 people. And even if they could see a doctor, many Cameroonians couldn’t afford it.
When he saw his father and so many of his countrymen suffer,Bwelle decided to do something about it.
He became a doctor himself. And he started an organization,ASCOVIME. It travels into the countryside on weekends to provide free medical care. Since 2008,he and his group of volunteers have helped nearly 32,000 people.
Almost every Friday, his team jam into vans and travel to villages in need. In each trip they receive 500 people. Patients come on foot from 60 kilometers around the village for free treatment.
The next morning, the team will do simple operations in a schoolhouse, town hall or home, and work into the early hours of Sunday morning.
On Sunday, the team heads back to the city, tired but proud of their work. They know that their help can make a world of difference to those they help.

“The Green Wall Initiative” is a project that encourages students to protect the environment by creating their own gardens on the walls. The project was started in 2007 by the African Union. Urban Middle School in Beijing is the first one to take part in the project in China.
The project in Urban Middle School teaches students about sustainable(可持续的)practices, plant care and teamwork. In the project, students make plans. A piece of wall is given to each class. Then students choose right plants to grow on the wall. They take turns to take care of the plants. They also record the growth of the plants.
The project is a success. Those living walls not only beautify the school environment, but also help make the air fresher and lower the temperature of the city. If you have a chance to learn by yourself, what might you do? Perhaps you choose to practice football skills; you would prefer to discuss something together; and you might just read. This is the most important thing of “unschooling”. It is also known as “natural learning” or “independent learning”. For this kind of educational practice, people think differently. Here are their comments(意见). |
Know More Schooling is education that children receive at school. Home schooling is the practice of educating that children learn at home with a parent or a tutor. Unschooling is an educational practice that allows children to decide how, what and where they want to learn. |
Agree Independent learning teaches children to be responsible for themselves. With no teacher around, children must manage themselves, and this is a really important skill for later life. Unschooling allows children to learn what they are really interested in. If learning is enjoyable, it’s more successful. Very young children learn in a natural way. Without being taught, they know colors and voices, they learn smiling and walking. Why shouldn’t people continue to learn like this? Unschooling gives children more time for sports, volunteering and museum or park visits. They may meet different people who share their interests. |
Disagree Unschooling requires parents’ support and attention. They need to create a learning space that excites children and remind them of their daily routines. Teachers can push children to learn what they don’t enjoy but can be important later in life. Unschooling sounds too good to be true. It can be helpful when children are very young. But it puts too much pressure on children because they can learn difficult subjects easily only with teachers’ help. Unschooling happens at home, so children could have less contact with others at their age. This means they could end up becoming shy. |
When deciding how you are going to learn, it’s necessary to think about which works. Choose what is suitable for you and what can have a positive influence on your growth.
