What do you think of black cats? Are they unluckier than cats of other colors? Many people in Western countries think so. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), did a study on cat colours and people’s understandings of cat personalities.
The study found that people do judge(判断) cat personalities by color. Scientists did a survey(调查) on the Internet. There were 49 statements (描述) matching five cat colorings with 10 personalities. People think orange and bi-coloured (双色的) cats are friendly, tri-coloured (三色的) cats are not generous, and white cats are calm, lazy and shy. As for black cats, people think they don’t have special personalities.
But why do so many people dislike keeping black cats as pets? People think black cats have less special personalities, which might be because of their bad reputation (口碑). They think black cats may bring bad luck, especially at Halloween. Movies and television shows also make people believe that.
Although people have these ideas, UC Berkeley scientists give another reason: people don’t think black cats are pretty enough. After all, nothing can show black cats are unluckier than other cats. “You can’t judge a cat by its colour, because it’s the personality of the cat, not the colour, that will let you know if the cat is right for you,” Cathy Marden, a scientist said. Something caught my eyes when I was walking down the street. Two silver coins were shining in a melting(融化的)snow bank(积雪),so I dug through the snow to look for more.Of course,I just ended up with two cold hands.I slipped the two coins into my pocket and went home, colder but richer.I began to think about how to spend the money.
Two days later,Mary and her little sister Susy were searching the snow banks."Finders are keepers" was my first thought. I didn't want to hand them out even though Susy was already crying."I dropped them right here,"she said with tears. Her hands were cold and red for digging in the snow."Maybe they slid down(滑下)the street with the melting snow. Let's dig over here."Mary's voice sounded confident.
"They'll never know" was my second thought, and I walked past them."Peter, have you seen two silver coins?"asked Mary. Susy looked up from digging. Her eyes were hopeful.
"Tell a lie" was my third thought."As a matter of fact,"I hesitated(犹豫),"I dug two coins out of that snow bank just a few days ago. I wondered who might have lost them."Susy hugged me with a big smile,"Oh,thank you, thank you."

When your pen is broken, the battery(电池)in your toy runs out,or you have some leftover(吃剩的)food, what do you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all kinds of rubbish need to be sorted(分类)separately.
Rubbish sorting is a big issue(议题)worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it. Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a" green account(账户)" service for its residents(居民).Account holders get points by sorting their rubbish correctly.
Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Wet waste is also known as household waste. Paper, metal and glass are recyclable waste. Medicine and batteries are harmful waste. Finally, any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the"dry waste" bin. Many other Chinese cities are also doing this. Shenzhen has been sorting its rubbish into the same four groups since 2012.Students there must study waste﹣sorting guidebooks.
If you don't sort your rubbish,it will go to a landfill(垃圾填埋场)and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground.
