No one wants to look stupid (愚蠢的) or do the wrong thing at a new job. It’s important to make the right impression from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place.
It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are five tips to help you make it through the first days at a new job.
1. First impression can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress code( rules about what you can wear to work) . If so, be sure to follow it. No matter what, always be neat and clean.
2. Get to work on time. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.
3. Pay attention to instructions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to co-workers. These co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around.
4. Ask lots of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.
5. Never be the first one to leave. Observe (观察) what your co-workers do around quitting time (下班时间). It does not look good for you to be eager to leave. Before you arrive at work on the first day, you should ___________.
A.dress in a right way |
B.introduce yourself |
C.know your duties |

When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had saidthis to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. “Does your mom love you?” “Of course ,”they answered.
How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always toldthem what they were doing wrong to showtheir caring. I was stunned .So mom’s cooking and criticizing read out as “I love you”. “Then how do you say ‘I love you’to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by god jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these queries in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot .While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love. The foreign teacher_______.
A.comes from America | B.is a young woman |
C.is expressive enough | D.knows much about China |
Chinese people prefer to show love by________.

In paragraph 4, what’s the real meaning of the mom’s hugging?
A.She is meeting her daughter at the door. |
B.She loves her daughter and misses her. |
C.She is glad that she has more time to herself |
D.he finds it interesting to hug her daughter. |
What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Say “I love you” more to your family. |
B.Say “I love you ” a lot to Chinese people . |
C.Say “I love you ” as a greeting to others. |
D.Say “I love you ” without great depth of feelings. |
Bananas don’t grow on trees. They grow on a stalk that looks just a little like a stalk of corn. The stalk is soft enough to be cut with a knife.
It takes about a year before bananas are ready to be picked. Some are as small as fingers. Others are as long as men’s arms. Some banana plants grow as tall as a house – even taller!
Not all bananas are eaten as fruit. Some never get sweet, and they are cooked as a kind of vegetable.
People in most countries never see a banana until it reaches the store. But if you visited a country where it’s hot and rains a lot all the year, you might see a banana plantation, a large farm where bananas grow.
The tasty fruit doesn’t come from a seed but from a root planted deep in the ground. First a stalk pushes up into the air. The leaves grow. In the beginning the banana plant grows very fast – sometimes as much as the length of your feet in one night. Soon, sweet-smelling flowers come out, and when their flowers drop off, bananas begin to grow.
As they get bigger, bananas start turning up. It looks as if they’re growing upside down! Bananas are ready to eat when they turn soft and yellow. Bananas are picked long before this – when they’re hard and green. This is because bananas have to travel many miles before they arrive at a store. On trucks and boats and trains bananas travel all over the world. There are special boats just for bananas and special trains that keep them just cool enough so that they will get ripe while traveling. If bananas are picked when they are ripe (成熟的), they will spoil on the way. What’s the weather like in places where bananas grow?

Scientists are trying to find out how things affect our feelings. How you feel is controlled by many things, such as your personality(性格), the actions(行动) of others. Maybe you don’t know the weather can affect your feelings as well.
People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies makes vitamin D(维生素D). Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical(化学物质). This special chemical affects our brains and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. To help the people in these countries feel better, scientists build special “sunrooms” for people to go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two!
The weather can also affect people’s feelings in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people don’t feel comfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unhappy. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can affect our feelings in these ways. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we cannot change the weather.Which of the following is TRUE about vitamin D according to the passage?
