Chicago is next to a beautiful lake, Lake Michigan. In the summer Lake Michigan is warm and blue .People lie on the beaches and swim in the water. In the winter Lake Michigan is cold and gray .Snow covers the beaches, and ice covers the water.
On a cold January day, a little boy and his father were playing in the snow on Chicago beach. The boy was Jimrsy Tontlewicx. He was four years old .Several Minutes went by .The father still couldn’t find Jimmy. Firemen(消防队员)arrived .Twenty minutes later they found Jimmy and pulled him out of the water. Jimmy was not breathing, and his heart was not beating . He was dead. At the beach paramedics(医务辅助人员)worked on Jimmy for an hour . He began to breathe , and his heart began to beat . The paramedics rushed Jimmy to the hospital.Doctors at the hospital put Jimmy in bed .They put him on a cold mattress (床垫)because they wanted his body to warm up slowly. They gave him some medicine because they wanted him to sleep .After six weeks in the hospital he got better ,Then he went to another hospital. He stayed there for seven weeks .He began to walk ,talk ,and play again.
Jimmy was in the water for more than 20 minutes . He couldn’t breathe in the water . He couldn’t get any oxygen(氧气).But today he is alive and healthy. How is it possible? Jimmy is alive because the water was ice cold. Usually the brain(脑)needs a lot of oxygen .But when it’s very cold , the brain slows down. It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No,I am not.Watch it for yourself! Ads on fashion TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets.Whether they have realized it or not, women are surrounded(包围)by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. so who dares to neglect(忽略) dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their appearances. The richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their appearances. a woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called “aunt” or“granny” can still keep up her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability,a kind heart, great courage, caring for others, etc.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts(相对的概念).People who keep a young mind will never feel old.Interested in new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the time. plainly-dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful.Good books are rich soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and appearances. Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins? Because women ________.

London’s Chinese community(社区) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limhouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limhouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.
After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled(定居) in different area—a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.
At first, the new immigrants (移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.
As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever. Why did many Chinese immigrants come to London in 1950s?
A.Because it was easy for them to get jobs there. |
B.Because Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war. |
C.Because many British people enjoyed Chinese food. |
D.Because their children could study there and get well-paid jobs. |
Where is London’s Chinatown now?
A.In the east of London |
B.In Limhousse |
C.Not far from Leicester Square. |
D.Outside the city |
