Born in America, I spoke English, not Chinese, the language of my ancestors. When I was three, my parents flashed cards with Chinese at my face , but I pushed them , my mom believed I would learn I was ready .But the never came.
On a Chinese New Year’s Eve, my uncle spoke to me in Chinese, but all I could do was at him, confused, scratching my head. “Still can’t speak Chinese?” He me, “You can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown.”
“Hey, this is America, not China. I’ll get some with or without Chinese.” I replied and turned to my mom for .
“Remember to ask for fresh fish, Xin Xian Yu,” she said, handing over a $20 bill .I the words running downstairs into the streets of Chinatown.
I found the fish surrounded in a sea of customers. “I’d like to buy some fresh fish,” I shouted to the fishman .But he my English words and turned to serve the next customer .The laugh of the people behind increased their impatience. With every , the breath of the dragons (龙) on my back grew stronger—my blood boiling— me to cry out . “Xian Sheng Yu, please” “Very Xian Sheng,” I repeated .The crowd erupted into laughter. My face turned and I ran back home , except for the $20 bill I held tightly in my pocket.
Should I laugh or cry. They‘re Chinese. I should feel right at . Instead , I was the joke , a disgrace (丢脸)to the language.
Sometimes , I laugh at my fish , but , in the end ,the joke is on . Every laugh is a culture ; every laugh is my heritage (传统) fading away(逐渐消失).

The day I was 3 years old the beginning of my dream. On that day, after seeing the Capital Dancing Company performance, I , “Mama, when I grow up, I’m going to be one of those.”
As I grow older, my in the world of dance changed, but that little girl’s dream of someday becoming a in the company never left me. In 2005, aged 18, I received the phone making that dream come true: I became a member of the company.
When I looked on that day now, I believe I stayed in a state of disbelief until I was asked to rehearsal (排练). Though I was entirely excited with the offer, it did not come without . Through the strict and hard rehearsal, I found it important to myself to learning the skills fast with every bit of concentration(注意力集中). It is the extreme to detail (细节) and stress on practice that help us . Then comes a show schedule of up to five performances a day, I found a new of the words “HARD WORK”. The practice pushed me forward than I thought . I learnt to make each performance better than the last. Besides, the teachers not only teach us skills but help us a lot in daily life when we are in trouble.
Today, as a member and dance captain in the unbelievable company, I see a that has encouraged not only little girls but a wonderful company that to develop and grow and encourage people every day to their dreams.

I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed. I have started to think about other people I think about myself. I am happy that I am becoming a person.
I think my started when I was at Palomar College. At first, I just wanted to get my and be left alone. I thought I was smarter than everyone else, so I hardly ever to anyone in my classes. By the end of my first semester, I was really . It seemed as if everyone but me had made friends and was having fun. So tried a(n) . I started asking people around me how they were doing, and if they were having trouble I to help. That was really a big for me. By the end of the year, I had several new friends, and two of are still my best friends today.
A bigger cause of my new , however, came when I took a part-time job at a Vista Nursing Home. One old lady there who had Alzheimer’s disease became my . Every time I came into her room, she was so because she thought I was her daughter. Her real daughter never her, so I took her place. She let me that making others feel good made me feel good, too, when she died, I was , but I was very grateful to her.
I think I am a much person today than I used to be, and I hope I will not these experiences. They have me to care about other people more than about myself. I who I am today, and I could not say that a few years ago.
