What do you do if you’re stranded (处于困境的)on a lonely island?Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of Body signals(信号).
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line,it means “yes”. When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side ,it means“no”. If you want the pilot to know that it’s safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend(弯曲)your knees. If you want to say that it’s not safe to land ,put your arms in the air and move them to one side.
Smoke signals
The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away ,so it’s a good way to draw attention .If the weather is dry,it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you’re sure that it can’t spread .If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily .Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.
Ground-to-air signals
It’s a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols(标记).If you can’t find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:
F “I need food and water”.
II “I need medicine”.
I “I am badly hurt”.
X “I am unable to move from here.”
Pilots’ replies
If the pilot lowers the plane’s wings from side to side ,this means“message received and understood”(At night, the pilot flashes the plane’s green lights.)If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle ,this means“message received but not understood”.(At night ,the pilot flashes the plane’s red lights.)
However, there is no signal which means “message not received”. Why not?Which picture means“it’s not safe to land”?

At night they usually sleep in a small tent, but they sometimes sleep in the Land Cruiser—when you’re very close to wild animals, it’s sometimes safer to sleep in the car!

Children are amazing! They pick up language so naturally and easily. Have you ever wondered why? It’s because of the way they learn.
Children learn by simply doing what comes naturally—they listen, copy, and communicate. Let’s take a closer look at how children learn language. Perhaps we can discover a better, more “natural” way to learn English.
Listen as often as possible
When people talk to children, they often use simple words that children can understand. That’s really important to the children’s language development. In order to learn, children must be able to understand what they hear. If they don’t understand it, it’s just meaningless noise.
Listen to radio or TV programs that use English at your level. If you can’t understand every word or sentence, don’t give up. Just pay attention to what you can understand. And listen as often as you can.
Be a Copycat
Children like to copy their parents, their friends and even the TV. (the, teaches, this, how, pronounce, them, language, to). As you listen to English, repeat what you hear as much as you can.
Use English to communicate
Children don’t practice grammar rules. They use language to talk about things that interest them. This helps them learn to express themselves. They don’t worry about their small vocabulary or poor grammar. They find ways to say what they want and they do it successfully.
So look for chances to talk with people in English. If you can’t find a foreigner to talk to, talk with other English students instead. Start an English discussion group and chat about music, movies and so on. Don’t worry about making mistakes. You can learn English better by correcting mistakes.Children learn English by __________ copying and communicating.

When I’m in trouble, I always take out a book and read quietly. I put my heart into it so that I’ll forget all the troubles. I’ve formed the habit of reading in this way.
When I was a little boy, I was interested in picture books and storybooks. When I was a middle school student, I began to read novels, plays, essays (散文) and so on. I found I could get much from them. Little by little I took great interest in literature (文学) and last term I won the first prize in the composition contest among middle school students in our city.
Reading The Emperor’s New Clothes, I had to let out a burst of laughter over his silly action. The Little Match Girl couldn’t keep me from crying for her misery (悲惨). Robinson Crusoe took me into a strange world full of danger. And I was also deeply impressed (留下印象) by Helen Keller’s perseverance (毅力). Besides these, books also tell me other things — how to be a brave man and how to tell the difference between the right and the wrong. In a word, good books can make me know what I didn’t know before. So I think of good books as my best friends.
