I am Simon. When I was about 12, I had an enemy(敌人), a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.
I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”
Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure all your life! Why did Simon dislike the girl?

I hid the long black bag in the garage(车库) for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.
It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to finish my plan.
First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 p.m. was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would know my secret.
Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.
It was already eleven o'clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer(锤子).
After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn't be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas brought them this year. Why did the man feel nervous?

What will man be like in the future --- in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, because man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average(平均), men are about three inches taller. 500 years is relatively(相对地) a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still use only about 20% of the brain's capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too. The head, especially the forehead(前额), will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are used too much. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a long time it is possible that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we make use of our arms and legs less. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive(敏感的) because they are used a lot in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women are likely to be hairless.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive(有吸引力的) person to look at! This may be true. However, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a person, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.The passage mainly tells us that __________.
A.man's life will be different in the future |
B.future man will look different from us |
C.man is growing taller in the future |
D.man is changing quickly all the time |
Which of these proves that man is changing?
A.Man sees better than before. |
B.Man's hair has been getting thinner. |
C.Man's arms and legs have been getting weaker. |
D.Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years. |
How much brain’s capacity of a person hasn’t been used now?
A.About 20% | B.About 80% |
C.About3% | D.About 50% |
Which of the following is TRUE about man in the future?
A.He is hairless because hair is no longer useful. |
B.He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses. |
C.His fingers grow weaker because he doesn't need to use them. |
D.He thinks and feels in a different way. |
We can learn from the article that .
A.man will become more attractive in the future |
B.Some parts of man’s body will become weaker because they are less used. |
C.People are sure about future man’s appearance |
D.Future life is challenging |
