Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems to protect their property(财产). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will guard factories, warehouses(仓库)and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to detect(察觉,发现) people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be prevented from entering the area it moves.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or a box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot is hard to be stolen anyway. It weighs about 200 pounds.
U.S. companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper.
Why is the new kind of robots called mobile robots? Because they can _______________.

A.guard factories, warehouses and museums
B.send loud, painful sirens when it is stolen
C.sense moving objects and signal police
D.move around and do the programmed work

How will a robot get directions for moving around a building?

A.From a human guard. B.From a built-in computer.
C.From another robot. D.From radio signals.

What can be the best title of this passage?

A.New Guards. B.Science and Technology.
C.Alarm Systems. D.Engineers and Robots.

When I was seven years old, my mom was diagnosed(诊断)with cancer. The doctors told us my mom might be saved with operation. But it could also kill her. She chose to have it.
The day before the operation I was off school, and my mom planned the best day of my life, everything I loved at seven and everything that would put a smile on my face. The day began with her waking me up saying, “Kate, I have a surprise for you. Come and see.” The surprise was a doll I had wanted for the longest time. Throughout the day, she told me everything that she thought I would need to know to grow up and be a good person; she told me to be the best I could be and that I would always make her proud. We had a picnic in the park, and it was so cold that we moved to the car. The day was filled with laughter. For the first time in a long time I could see she was really happy. I would never forget her smile, or the way her eyes shone as if we were the same age. It was the best day of my life, and I will never forget the conversations we shared.
My mother managed to live through the operation. Now when I look back, I realize that the best day of my life could be her last and this could be the last day I would remember with her, the last one we shared. I also understand how unselfish a mother is.
Who decided to have the operation?

A.The doctors. B.Kate’s mother.
C.Kate. D.Kate’s family.

What was the surprise to Kate?

A.Kate’s mother gave her a doll.
B.Kate’s mother woke her up late.
C.Kate’s mother talked a lot to her.
D.Kate’s mother was getting better.

Why was Kate’s mother happy that day?

A.Because she was proud of what her child had done.
B.Because she expected the operation to be successful.
C.Because she realized her child had grown up.
D.Because she left her child a special memory.

Feng Huan was born(出生) in a far village in Jiangxi Province. She is 13 years old, but she is only as tall as a six-year-old girl. She is an unlucky child. Born with an illness, she can’t walk as others. Family elders once tried to abandon(遗弃) her because of her poor health, but her mother never gave up. She named her Feng Huan, which means happiness, hoping her daughter would grow up to have a happy life in the future.
The illness brought so much pain to Feng Huan over the years. Her legs have become deformed as she has been unable to walk since she was born. She could hardly walk or go to the washroom without help. What’s worse, her illness is getting worse and worse, which puts pressure on one of her kidneys(肾脏). Her mother has taken her to Shanghai to see a doctor, and her parents have done everything they could to treat her illness.
Thanks to great love from her mother, Feng Huan is able to go to school as other children. She says she loves school because she can learn many things there and chat with her classmates. After she goes home on her mother’s back from school, she does her homework with her favorite doll by her side. She takes the doll everywhere with her, even when she sleeps.

Children laugh often and easily. But as we grow up, we laugh less and feel more stressed. Try laughing for no reason at all. That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world, and doctors now think that having a good laugh may be one of the best ways to keep healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai ,India ,in June,1995 by Dr Madam Kataria. “ Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day, ”says Dr Kataria . “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing . We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 worldwide.
