When you are sad, you need to find ways to deal with(处理)your sadness. When you learn how to deal with your sadness, you’ll find your own happiness.
Accept(接受)your sadness. It’s not a bad thing to feel sad. Try to face what is making you feel sad. Don’t pretend(假装)it isn’t there. And don’t believe it will just go away on its own.
Speak about your sadness. You don’t have to tell everybody everything, but it is nice to talk to friends or family about your feelings. You may not need him or her to say a word; just having someone to listen to you is sometimes enough.
Put your sadness into written words. Write down how you are feeling every day and why you think you are feeling this way. Write down how you deal with your sadness and which ways work.

Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. Their school days are busy enough. After school, though, Cathy takes the two boys from football to basketball. Then she has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don’t get home until 7 pm. They have a quick supper, and it’s time for homework.
The Taylors are like many American and British parents. They take their children from activity to activity, and try to fit as much as possible into their kids’ lives. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Teachers complain(抱怨) about teaching tired kids in the classroom.
Most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music and math classes. Pushy parents are nothing new, but now parents seem to push their children a lot more. Parents see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.
Linda Miller, a mother of three in London, knows all about such pressure. “In some families, competition starts from a very young age,” she says. “Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.
Dr Alice Green agrees. She also says that these children may find it hard to think for themselves when they are older. “Parents are trying to plan their kids’ lives for them. When these kids are adults, they might find it difficult to plan things for themselves.” Parents should learn to give their kids a bit more time to themselves. On one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves.

Entering high school means you have to make more effort on study, There are a few tried and tested skills that have always proved effective(有效的) for learning. Here are some of them.
Firstly, make a timetable and follow it. This will include how many hours and which part of the day you will spend studying. Try to make sure that your study time takes place after you have rested, so that you are fresh and can learn effectively. You will find that studying at the same time every day will help you concentrate(集中) better. It’s also important to keep improving your timetable, to make it more effective over time.
Secondly, pick a place that will help you concentrate on study. The place should be far away from loud sounds which make you uncomfortable and prevent you from concentrating on your study.
High school study skills include a method called SQ3R. The first step is to survey(纵览) what needs to be covered in order to get a general understanding of the subject. Next, you can learn about the material by answering questions such as what, why, how, when, who and where. As you study, ask yourself questions and look for the answers in your material. The third step is to read and then recite(背诵) what you have read. The last step, reviewing, is often the most important one. People need to review any material about three times, before they keep it well in their minds.

Social customs (习俗) and ways of behaving change all the time. Things that were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered to be impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.
Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn’t matter? What about table manners (行为)?
The Americans and British people not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to women, and so will most Americans. Promptness (准时) is important both in England and in America. That is, the dinner guest (客人) either arrive close to the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay (耽误).
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable —especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served (服务), one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or greatly surprised, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable. The underlined phrase “make a fool of himself” in the first paragraph means .
A.make himself strong | B.make himself rich |
C.make himself comfortable | D.make himself seemed like a fool |
If a dinner invitation is for six o’clock, the guest is supposed to arrive at six.
A.nearly or a minute or two later than | B.a quarter past |
C.a quarter to | D.much later than |
The last example in the passage shows .
A.the correct way to use a knife at table |
B.that it is good manners not to make your guest feel foolish or uncomfortable |
C.that social customs and ways of behaving change too fast |
D.that different counties have different customs |
The best title of the passage is .
A.Different Customs | B.Social Customs |
C.Customs Are Changing Fast | D.Different Countries, Different Customs |
