Long ago, there lived a clever man in China. He was famous for his wide knowledge. And lots of people from all over the country came to learn things from him. The great man taught his students with all his heart and answered their questions with great patience(耐心).
One day a student asked him, “My dear teacher, didn’t you say you have more questions than we do? But we think we students have a lot more than you.” With a smile, the teacher drew two circles—one is as large as a big plate, and the other smaller.
“Of course, I’ve learned much more. But I don’t think I know all you know. Now, look at these two circles:Inside the big one is my knowledge of things, and inside the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what we don’t know. My circle is larger, so its line is longer. That means I have more chances to meet with what I don’t know. And that’s why I have more questions than you. Each nation has many good people who help take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages(孤儿院) or homes for the aged(老人). They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them or listen to their problems. Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair houses, do shopping and mow(割草) their lawns(草坪). For boys who no longer have fathers, there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to basketball games or on fishing trips and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Some cities have a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts(手艺). Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Zhang Li lies in bed sadly. The 24-year-old young man lost his right leg because of a blood disease (血液病). The doctor said that his 10 years of smoking had caused the disease.
“I first smoked a cigarette when I was in Junior 3. It made me feel like a man and I thought it looked cool. Now I know I was really wrong,” said Zhang.
According to the 2008 China Tobacco Control report (中国烟草控制报告), 130 million young people who are under 18 years old have tried smoking. Fifteen million of them are addicted (上瘾的).
The report came out on May 31, World No-Smoking Day. It also found that nearly 68% of teenage smokers smoked their first cigarette before the age of 13. Those living in big cities started even earlier.
“Some tobacco companies try to make cigarettes cool and attractive. It’s just to make money,” said Yang Gonghuan, a doctor. In fact, smoking is one of the top killers in China. Each year 1 million people die from smoking-related (与吸烟有关的) diseases. Smoking causes illnesses like lung cancer and heart disease.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape(逃跑)? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury (伤害).
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger-tips (手指尖) will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (泄露) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof (屋顶). From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥) might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.
