The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe,Africa and Asia.People reached these different places along these roads.Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago.By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the word, the Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk,of course. They also carried and traded spices(香料),cloth, valuable stones and gold.

In modern times, the old Silk Roads routes(路线) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000 objects from all along the Silk Road.In this way,China protects the of many countries and peoples.

On April 26,2017,a big Chinese ship caught the eyes of the whole world.China's first homemade aircraft carrier﹣(航空母舰)hit the water in Dalian,Liaoning. It is the largest and best ship China has ever built

The new ship is China's second aircraft carrier and it has n o name yet.China's first carrier is called Liaoning, which was bought from Ukraine and later rebuilt by China. The new carrier was designed in China and building began in 2013.It is about 315 meters long and 75 meters wide. That is a bit larger than three soccer fields. The ship must be completed at sea, which will take several years.

An aircraft carrier is like an airport on the sea.It can carry planes and troops to war.Planes fly from and land back on it,and soldiers work and live on it.Thanks to carriers, planes can fight along with warships. They allow planes to take off and land from anywhere in the ocean around the world.

But an aircraft carrier is very hard and expensive to build. It costs a lot of money and needs a large amount of steel and other special materials. For example,a basic aircraft carrier is made of 60,000 tons of steel! It also uses complex(综合的)technologies, including radar, electrics, mechanics and weapons. Finally,it takes years to build.

In 1882,a baby girl caught such a serious fever that she nearly died. The fever cut her off from the outside world, depriving(剥夺)her of sight and sound. That poor girl was Helen Keller.

Luckily Helen was not a girl who gave up easily.Soon she began to explore the world by using her other senses. She touched and smelled everything she came across. She also learnt to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes.

Just before her seventh birthday, the family hired a private tutor﹣Anne Sullivan. With the help of Anne,Helen soon learnt to read and write in Braille(盲文).She also learnt to read people's lips by pressing her finger﹣tips against them and feeling the movement and vibrations(振动).She also learnt to speak,a major achievement for people who could not hear at all.

Helen proved to be a remarkable scholar, graduating with honors from Radchff College in 1904.While she was still at college, she wrote The Story of My Life.

She toured the country, giving lecture after lecture. Many books were written about her and several plays and films were made about her life. Finally she became so famous that she was invited abroad and received many honors from foreign universities. In 1932 she became a vice﹣president of the Royal National Institute for the Blind in the United Kingdom.
