Sit With Us
You’re at your new school. It’s lunch time, but you don’t have anyone to sit with. You want to join someone at their table, ___(1)___ you’re not sure if they’re friendly. What do you do? Natalie’s ___(2)___ of solving the problem was to create an app. She knows what it feels like to be alone at a new school. She found it difficult to make new friends and had to ___(3)___ a new table at lunch every day. If she sat ___(4)___, she felt lonely. But if she asked to join someone and was __(5)__, she felt embarrassed. She created a lunch-planning app to help students like ___(6)___ find people to have lunch with.
The app — called Sit With Us — is ___(7)__. If a student is having lunch in the afternoon, he or she can create an invitation. Other students can open the app and __(8)___ that invitation. They can then use the app to decide when and where to ___(9)___. This allows students to make ___(10)___ online instead of face-to-face. This is the reason why it works so _ (11)__: it lowers the risk of being refused, and the embarrassment that goes along with it.
Natalie is __(12)__ to see that people are replying to her app actively — especially those who suffer from bullying (遭受欺凌). Soon after she made her app available to the public, she won a prize for it. She __(13)__ appeared in many news stories.
Natalie was even asked to speak at a university. In her ___(14)__, Natalie wanted people to know that you don’t have to do something ___(15)___ to change lives. Sometimes, a simple thing — like having a friend to enjoy lunch with — can make all the difference.

I went to Beijing to study Chinese last year. I was ___(1)___ about all the chances to better my language skills, walk on the Great Wall, and most of all, eat real Chinese food! I ___(2)___ remember my first jianbing, jiaozi and Peking duck. Each of them was amazing in its own way.
I knew that real Chinese food would be different from the Chinese food I had eaten in the USA. I couldn’t wait to try all the ___(3)___ dishes that came up in my research about Chinese food. One of my favorites turned out to be hotpot(火锅).
My first-ever hotpot experience in Old Beijing was ___(4)___. As a first-timer, I was moved by the waiters’___(5)___ and their warmth of welcome. They tried their best to introduce all of the oils and spices(调味香料)to me.
Looking around, I found that everyone had their own favorite sauce combinations(酱料组合), ingredients and styles(食材和风格). Some would carefully ____(6)___ their ingredients into the hotpot one after another. Others would impatiently put whole plates into the bubbling(冒泡的)oil. You can learn a lot from the ____(7)____ people eat hotpot.
When I went back to the USA, I ___(8)____ to prepare a hotpot meal for my family. It allowed me to not only share the culture that I had learned about, but also offer others a chance to ____(9)___ China like I had. It’s amazing that ___(10)___ could bring so much to life!

After a long journey, we arrived in a completely different place with ___(7)___ green. Here we were planted in a line. ___(8)___ the wind blew strongly, I could not even open my eyes to see Tim __(9)___ beside me. So we needed enough __(10)__ to grow thicker and higher to stop the wind.
As time went by, we finally ___(11)___ much stronger. I could keep my eyes open in the wind! I even found the blue sky was back!
This was no longer a no-man’s-land, and hundreds of visitors came here. A man took a picture of us with his ___(12)___, “Thank you. We can enjoy clear days ___(13)___ worrying about sand storms.” A young girl jumping up and down came over and ___(14)___ me. “Thank you,” she said, “It’s you that have turned the desert into a green land!”
Tim and I smiled at each other, feeling ___(15)__. The sun was shining brightly in the bluer sky.
