The British Museum is the biggest one in the world. There are lot of things in the museum to see:clocks
which have been telling the time for six hundred years,Roman money, the earliest books in the world, including Shakespeare's own works…
The British Museum was set up nearly 300 years ago by a doctor.Sir Hans Sloane. The man liked to collect such things as books, drawings, clothes, money, animals, flowers, and also hoped that his things would be well kept and visited by people after his death. His wish came true, and the museum opened in 1759,six years after Sir Hans Sloane died.
Later, more antiques (古董) arrived at the museum, more books old and new, came to it,and more people wanted to visit it.All this made Pauizzi design the famous round Reading Room. There was something unusual in it.Cool air came up through small holes in the tables.Hot air under the floor kept readers'feet warm.Since its opening, many famous men have written and studied there, including Karl Marx. And the library is growing faster and faster. Many tourists come to visit it every year.
It is not open every day of the year, except for two holidays (New Year's Day and Christmas).Entrance (进入)is free. There are lots of special exhibitions (展览) and every day. There are different films and talks, some of them for children. So if you are one of its two million visitors this year, don't try to see it all too quickly. There is a lifetime of looking in the British Museum.

Just how popular was Mini? Very. Every year her classmates voted(推举) her the favorite student. The friends she had were much more than those of anyone else.
One day Mini was caught yakkety-yakking(大声说笑) and ordered to stay back as punishment(惩罚). Staying back meant doing something “useful”, like helping in the library after school.
Now Mini’s school had a rule. Once a month, if you had something else to do the day you were punished, you could ask a friend to stand in for you.
Unluckily, her aunt was visiting Mini that day. That afternoon was the only chance Mini had of seeing her for another five years.
Mini needed someone to stand in for her. She asked Betty, her “best” friend. “Oh, no, Mini, I can’t,” Betty said. “I must help my brother do his homework.”
“Tony, will you stay back for me?” Mini asked another friend. “I wish you’d told me earlier. I have to go to a relative’s house with my father,” he said.
Now, Mini was beginning to doubt(怀疑) if even one of her friends would agree to stay. But she tried again. She asked three more friends and each one refused.
So, after school Mini stayed to help the librarian. And, when she found Mini crying after everyone had left, it was she who surprised Mini by allowing her to leave to meet her aunt. “I may have many friends,” Mini said to herself, “but in reality I have none.”What does staying back mean in Mini’s school?

Three men traveling on a train began a conversition about the world's greatest wonders.
“ In my opinion,” the first man said, “ the Egyptian pyramids are the world’s greatest wonder. Although they were built thousands of years ago, they are still standing. And remember: the people who built them had only simple tools. They didn’t have the kind of machinery that builders and engineers have today.
“ I agree that the Egyptian pyramids are wonderful,” the second man said, “ But I don’t think they’re the greatest wonder. I believe computers are more wonderful than the pyramids. They have taken people to the moon and brought them back safely. They carry out mathematical calculations in seconds that would take a person a hundred years to do.”
He turned to the third man and asked, “ What do you think is the greatest wonder in the world?”
The third man thought for a long time, then he said, “ Well, I agree that the pyramids are wonderful, and I agree that computers are wonderful, too. However, in my opinion, the most wonderful thing in the world is the thermos(保温瓶).”
And he took a thermos out of his bag and held it up.
The other two men were very surprised. “ A thermos?” they exclaimed(大声说), “ But that’s a simple thing.”
“ Oh, no, it’s not,” the third man said, “ in the winter you put in a hot drink and it stays hot, in the summer you put in a cold drink and it stays cold. How does the thermos know whether it is winter or summer?”The travelers passed the time on the train by talking about _______.
