Dear Mr. Scott,

I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from your next﹣door neighbor, but I have to raise a theme that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing. You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running along the fence(栅栏)that separates our two gardens. You may also have felt happy when you see your two children sitting on your grass by the fence. And you may also have noticed that my apple trees bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest. It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest. And it is quite legal(合法的)for them to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence. But to tell you the truth, Mr. Scott, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, destroy the branches of every one of my apple trees. And it seems that a war has been fought on one side of my apple trees. Besides, I am more tired of waking up on these fine autumn mornings to find even the apples on MY side of the fence much less in number. I know this too is the work of your children, since last night I was woken at midnight by the noise they were making when climbing one of my trees, and (as they may have told you) I drove them away.

Yours sincerely,

Becky Aldrin

I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes,I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food, especially my favorite﹣huo guo.You can't imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen,I seemed to smell huo guo in the air.

To my surprise, when I stepped into the room,I didn't see any sign of huo guo.Where was it?

With many questions in my head,I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl,I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot.Chinese huo guo is written in two words﹣hot pot; and hotpot, one word,is a traditional English dish.

Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes.People put it in the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat.It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see it at parties in the UK because it's easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.

Hotpot doesn't taste bad. However,I still miss huo guo﹣hot pot,two words!

A teacher says music education in schools has kind of turned into amusement.Classroom lessons focus heavily on pop while understanding the classical(古典的)art form and its history should be paid attention to.

A professor in music and music education at the University of NSW.Robert Walker, argues that all students should study the works of Western chassical composers such as Haydn and Tchaikovsky.

Professor Walker says students are missing out on an important part of the culture heritage(遗传)because they fail to study classical music,as the little music that children learn at school is mainly pop.The lack(缺乏)of music teaching is serious, especially in government schools where there are not enough specialist(专业的)music teachers.

A national review in 2005 made 15 suggestions, but Professor Walker said it still failed to deal with the lack of classical music taught in schools.

"I'm not against pop music, but it's very simple, and not difficult either to play or to sing."Professor Walker says."But classical music is challenging and although it is part of Australias's culture heritage, most children learn it only through Hollywood films."

"At least children ought to know what's happening in Western culture. It's part of culture heritage,"he says."Asian students know more about Western classical music than most children in the West."

Professor Walker has taught music and music teachers in Britain,Canada and Australia and is a former chief(首席的)examiner for the International Baccalaureate and a former chairman of the research committee of the International Society for Music Education.Professor Walker says no school curriculum(课程)in Australia lists a piece of music that children should study, such as the Mendelssohn's.

"This lack of standard texts means that some children can be brought up totally on Western classical music, others on Elvis Presley,or on any music the teacher wants to teach. The situation should be changed as soon as possible,"he says.

A.He worries about the music education in schools.

There are many reasons why I encourage people to travel, and I know that the experience will make one a better person.

I remember when I was traveling that I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me,my small town and home.Although you will meet different people from all over the world, you will realize that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings.Enjoy exploring the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of the things they do and how they live.Once you understand their ways,it need not be strange or scary.Often we read stories about other cultures in books.Only when we visit their areas,do we find that those stories are sometimes wrong.

One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. We cannot just get money to send to these areas and hope that will work them out.The world should get involved(干预)and help wherever there are problems.People everywhere should be given a chance. It is so easy to ignore(忽视)this if one does not travel and explore. One can look around and see that so many people have many challenges worse than ours. One can realize that sometimes our biggest problems are not that big agter all.

On your journey you will meet lots of new friends.Talking to strangers and finding about their lives is a great way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to cope with problems and make many decisions along the way.

When you travel, you have to be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your special experiences could make an interesting book to read.It would be filled with all your adventures and special memories.

Traveling around and seeing so much happening in the world around us is a wonderful experience. If we could all just travel a little more and share our experiences,we would all be better people and the world would be a better place.
