It is nearly impossible to answer the question when or where baseball started. Several cultures created games which involve(涉及) hitting a ball with a bat and running. But there were several rules that made them quite different from each other. The game of baseball itself has improved over time and has several changes from its early version(版本).

When did baseball start in the US? As the legend goes, the game we know as baseball today was invented or at least built with an accepted set of rules by Alexander Joy Cartwright. As there is little proof(证据) that baseball was played in the United States before Alexander Joy Cartwright wrote up the rules of baseball, it has been formally accepted that Cartwright is, if not the biological, the most suitable father of baseball.

The legend further goes that baseball, which has grown to become a hugely popular game in the United States today, was invented in a famous Manhattan based club called the Knickerbockers. So the name for the rules set by Alexander Joy Cartwright was then called "the Knickerbockers Rules". The first New York baseball team was called the New York Knickerbockers. Having created the rules, Cartwright was naturally the judge (裁判) for the first ever baseball game played in the United States base on the rules.

Cartwright's contribution(贡献) to baseball doesn't just end in setting the rules for the game. He is also known for popularizing the game and its rules over the United States. Cartwright. Who traveled to California during California Golf Rush, spread the knowledge of baseball pretty much at every stop on his way from New York to California.

Till about the late 1860 s, baseball was largely an amateur game until a Cincinnati club﹣the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which is known to almost all Americans﹣decided to recruit(招募) the best players for prize money. The first professional baseball league in the United States was the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, which was set up in 1871.

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce the chance of becoming short-sighted, a research shows. It challenges the belief(信念) that short-sightedness is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.
The Australian government researchers believe that the sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They compared the vision(视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the Singaporean children were short-sighted—this rate(比率) was ten times higher than Australian children.
Both groups spend a similar amount(数量) of time reading, watching television and playing computer games. However the Singaporean children spent an average (平均) of only half an hour a day outdoors—90 minutes less than the Australian children.
Professor Ian Morgan, from the Australian Research Council’s vision Centre, said, “Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger. We’re also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors.
Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical(化学物质) which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.
So be outdoors. It doesn’t matter if that time is spent having a picnic or having sports.
How much time did the Australian children spend outdoors on average accordingto the
research?

A.30 minutes. B.60 minutes.
C.90 minutes. D.120 minutes.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.If people spend less time outdoors they will certainly become short-sighted.
B.There are fewer short-sighted Singaporean Children than Australian children because they have more know ledge of protecting their eyesight.
C.There will be fewer risks of getting short-sighted if people spend two or three hours a day playing out side.
D.When people begin to go to school they will become long-sighted.

What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?

A.Why natural daylight has a special chemical.
B.Why daylight prevents people from becoming short-sighted.
C.Why daylight is much brighter than indoor light.
D.What the special chemical which can stop eyeballs from growing out of shape is.

Every weekend in Britain there’s a certain kind of shop that is always very busy, but it’s not one of the shops you might typically think of, but DIY (Do It Yourself) shops and garden centers. Each weekend huge numbers of people might not relax themselves, they spend their days doing improvements to their homes.
DIY projects are very popular in Britain and there are lots of TV programs which show people how they can improve their homes.
Some people enjoy simple decorations (装饰) - put up wallpaper and paint walls, but there is a whole range of different DIY projects that people decide to take on, from changing the new floor or setting a new shower.
Unluckily, some people bite off more than they can chew (自不量力), and try to take on jobs which end in DIY disasters (灾难). For example, often the shops will tell their customers that anything electrical should be done by an electrician (电工), but many people don’t care this warning and put themselves in danger.

When the bell rings, every student takes out an IPad. The light from the screens makes their young faces pretty and lively.
That’s what happens every day at my school in the US. We use IPad in class.
I felt surprised and excited when I got an IPad the first day I arrived at the school. But it was not free. I paid about $99 to rent it for three years.
Every IPad at my school has a special learning system called Focus. Teachers put their teaching materials like textbooks and PPTs on it. When we have classes, we enter the system and download the materials with our IPads.
It makes the classes interesting and efficient. For example, several weeks ago, we learned about former South African president Nelson Mandela. Our teacher prepared a video in which Mandela made an encouraging speech. We could not only watch the video, but also check the transcript (文字稿)at the same time. Because of the video, I know more about the great man.
We also do our homework with IPads. If the homework is made up of multiple choices(选择题),we can know our grades right away after we submit(提交)our homework. If it’s articles, teachers grade them online, without needing to look through so many papers.
However, there are still some bad points about learning with IPads. Some of my classmates play games or log on social networking websites (社交网站)in class.
I believe the key to use Ipads well is to have good self-control (自制力), isn’t it?
The writer paid about _____ dollars to rent an Ipad every year.
A.99 B. 612 C. 33
How is an IPad used in class?
A. We enter the system-Focus and download the materials with it.

I have just received your letter. And I was very surprised to know that you decided to drop out of school and wanted to be a model (模特).
Being a model for a living is not easy. In fact, a famous person like me has a lot of problems that you couldn’t see. I can’t eat what I like, even though I’m very hungry. Keeping thin makes me look more beautiful on the stage because no one would like to see a heavy model.
Besides, I have to wear a heavy coat in the hot sun, in a swimming suit in the cold air. And practicing walking nicely every day is tiring for me.
You might say I made much money from modeling. But my dear niece(侄女),you have to know that money is nothing, knowledge is everything. School is important and everyone should go to school for a certain period of time. The longer they stay at school, the better they will be. Very often, I hope I can give up my job and continue my studies at school. But it is very difficult for me to go back to school again. I am too old to go back to school now.
You are a pretty young girl with a bright future. You only have one year to finish your studies in high school. A year is really short. Please do consider my words carefully before you decide. Of course, there is only one thing I care about, and that is your happiness.
