Penguins are lovely animals. Most people like them. But now as many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins are in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins has decreased by ( 减少了) 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in the Antarctic Continent (南极大陆) ,New Zealand, Australia and South America. Many live near cold waters (水域). But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly, but they are fine swimmers. The shape of their body helps them to survive. Penguins eat fish and krill (磷虾). They have short wings that help them to dive up to 900 feet to catch larger fish. They can swim 10-15 kilometers an hour which lets them protect themselves. They also have lots of body oil that helps in keeping them dry in the water.
The warming of the earth is the reason for the decrease in the number of penguins. The hotter and hotter air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperature has decreased the fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproduce. And many adult penguins die of hunger.
Too much fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks (泄漏) also make penguins be in danger. Poisonous things in ocean waters are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including sharks, seals and sea lions.Penguins can do the following except________.
A.diving | B.flying | C.swimming | D.catching fish |

All living things on the earth need other living things to live.Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind.Sometimes one living thing kills another,or one eats and the other is eaten. One kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain(食物链).All food chains begin with the sun,and all food chain become broken up if one of them disappears.
All life needs sunlight to live on.But only plants can use sunlight directly.Plants are“factories”.They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air.
Plants feed all other living things.Animals can only use the sun’s energy(能量)after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, and others eat smaller animals.Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of any food chain. We eat rice, vegetables, fruits and so on.We also eat meat. But men often break up the food chain. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them cannot be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases.

How quickly can you count from one to ten?Do you use ten different words to do it?Can you do it in English,or do you have to use your first?language?Do you count on your fingers? Many
people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.
People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger, which they extend or stick out. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb(拇指)to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten.In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way,a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.
Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers.A group of scientists studied aboriginal(土著的)people in Australia. There people don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers.
In a similar study, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered that people of the Piraha tribe(部落)in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as“one”or“three”.They are not able to say“five trees”or“ten trees”but can say“some trees”.“more trees”.or“many trees”.Professor Edward Gibson said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count,“but here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture,so they’ve never picked it up.”
Although all humans are able to understand quantities(数量),not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting.Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too. The writer begins with the four questions in order to________.
A.make a survey |
B.interest readers |
C.tell a story |
D.solve math problems |
