A few months after returning the US from Germany ,I tookpart in a college course in French. Since I have learned tospeak German good in Germany, I thought that it might beinterested to begin studying another language. Some students believe that whether they have much money or large possessions, they will be happy. They believe that they will be able to do anything they wanted to do if they have money. Some students think that they should be good health, and enjoy whatever they like. Many students wish to have much wealth from their parents. In this way, they don’t have to work hardly and they can own everything. I don’t quite agree on the above points. I don’t think money means happy. We cannot buy much things with money, such as health, happiness and knowledge. I value knowledge, it makes me happy, for I can do a lot of for mankind with knowledge. Although different people value happiness differently, me wealth of happiness is in my study.

When I first learned to write in English，I ran into much difficulties. The main problem was in that I always thought in Chinese and tried to translate anything into English. Soon I began to enjoy talk to myself on paper as I was learning to express me in simple English. One day I wrote a little story and showed to my teacher. She liked it very much and reads it to the class. All said the story was a good one. Their word were a great encouragement to me.

Ken was having a serious back pain. He was in the hospital. The doctor talked to Eva, Ken’s wife, about her condition. When she asked what serious her husband’s back trouble was, the doctor said that Ken should have a completely bed rest. This meant that he has to lie down all the time for 2 or 3 weeks after he could go home. He then had to stay bed for about 10 days. After that, he could only got up twice a day to move around for 10 minute. Finally he could do some easy exercise. When he could walk round for an hour, he was able leave the hospital.

An old man whose eyesight was failing comes to stay in a hotel, a bottle of whisky in his hand. On the wall was a fly he took for a nail. The moment he tried to hang the bottle on it, they fell and broke. When the landlady discovered what had been happened, she decided to do him favor. The next morning when he was out, the hotel worker hammered a nail exact where the “fly” had been. Before the old man came back, the smell of the whisky reminded him the accident. Looking at the spot what he thought the “fly” was again, he was so angry that he slapped it with all his strengths. On hearing the loud cry, the landlady rushed in. To her surprise, the poor old man was sitting on the floor with his teeth clenched(咬紧) and the palm of his hand bleed.
