Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students, they always say, "My spoken English is poor." I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal in speaking should be fluency not accuracy. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive(被动反应的) rather than proactive(积极行动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.
A.The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for mistakes he hears. |
B.They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time. |
C.Obviously the better way is to expand their vocabulary. |
D.If you have proactive outlook(观点), then you will see English opportunities wherever you go. |
E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor
F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the unwillingness of using what has just been learned.

A. Careful biological research B. The information of global warming C. Solution to the terrifying result D. Greater danger of extinction E. Examples of species in danger of extinction F. A shocking report |
The earth is getting warmer. People burn coal, oil and gas and this produces carbon dioxide, methane (沼气) and nitrous oxide. These gases, called “greenhouse gases”, prevent the heat of the sun from leaving the earth’s upper atmosphere and this makes the earth warmer.
A few weeks ago a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world. They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals. According to what they found, the scientists say that during the next 50 years about 25% of land animals and plants will become extinct. More than a million plant and animal species will be extinct by 2050.
More than 10% of all plants and animals will become extinct. It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere. But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now, we could save many more plants and animals from extinction.
The scientists studied some regions of the world with a very rich biology. These regions were Europe, Australia, Central and South America and South Africa. Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move a very long distance to get cooler, so they are in greater danger of extinction.
The scientists found that half of the 24 species of butterflies they studied in Australia would soon become extinct. 60% of the species in the Kruger National Park in South Africa would also die out, and more than 100 of the 300 South Africa plant species they studied would also become extinct. One of the plants in danger of extinction is the national flower of South Africa, the King Protea. They studied 163 tree species in the Cerrado region of Brazil and found that 70 would become extinct. Many of the plants and trees that live in this region live nowhere else in the world. In Mexico, they studied 1,870 species and found that more than 30% of these were in danger of extinction.

Albert Einstein offered us more than just the amazing theory of relativity andmc². Through his persistence in his discoveries in science, Einstein shined a light on how each of us can do the impossible by working hard, experiencing failure, and valuing people.
● Simplify Your Work
“ If you can’t explain it to a six years old, you don’t understand it yourself.” --Albert Einstein

In the 60s, people asked about your astrological (about star) sign. In the 90s, they want to know your website. Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.
Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.
While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout(版面设计). At the top of the page is a banner(横幅)GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and short description of the site. Pictures, text, and links to other websites follow.Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site.
While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:If you want too much at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add to your site.
Less is better. Most people don’t like to read a lot of long texts online.
Smaller is better. Since it can take a long time to download large files, keep the file sizes small.
Have the rights. Don’t put any material on your site unless you are sure you can do it legally. Always remember to get the permission from the writer first.
Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start building.
A.Start simply. |
B.Break it into small pieces. |
C.Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper. |
D.Many websites are considered very interesting. |
E. Before you start building your site, do some planning.

Sometimes willpower is a lot like the television remote control hard to find just when you want it most. But there are ways to increase your will power.
Don’t try to change your economic situation, win a promotion and lose weight all on the same morning. Set one clear, specific goal and make a realistic plan to achieve it. Extra willpower sometimes requires extra energy, so don’t spread yourself too thin..
Whatever your goal is, don’t expect to achieve it overnight. If you are trying to kick a coffee habit, start by replacing your morning cup of coffee with a glass of water, instead of promising never to drink coffee again. Congratulate yourself on the small achievements. These successes help your willpower grow.
Ask friends, family or colleagues for assistance and tell them exactly how they can help. If your credit card bills have risen, for instance, let friends know that you are cutting back on expenses. Suggest having a common dinner instead of meeting at an expensive restaurant. Find support group or organization related to your goal and attend their meetings. You can get valuable advice, understanding and information.
If possible, change your environment to encourage positive behavior. Want to get in shape? Keep an set of workout clothes in your office as a reminder to stop by the gym on the way home. Quitting smoking?
A.Real success takes time. |
B.Focus on one goal at a time. |
C.Change your environment to change your life. |
D.Improve your willpower by a support network. |
